Unalienable Rights

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

I do not agree that the Creator endowed us with certain unalienable rights. Claiming a creator endowed us with rights simply legitimized claiming of those rights in the same way the divine right of kings legitimized the monarch’s power. We have these rights that we will not let anyone take away simply because the super-majorty of westerners want those rights and will fight to protect those rights. They are inalienable because, as a nation, we have committed to not let anyone take them away.

There is no need for faith in a “Creator” to have faith in the ideals of the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States; it only takes acceptance of the historical fact that, while most people are good people, some people are  greedy for money and  power. It could be said that there is a “natural law” that men will be selfish. The Declaration asserts we have individual rights and will fight to protect them and the Constitution protects those rights from usurpation with a system of checks and balances.
